Lacura at The Cookie

Here’s a new band for you, Lacura. Their brief history to date can be summed up as follows: debut gig in January of this year, second gig supporting the Vryll Society at the Cookie in March and two songs uploaded to Soundcloud in May. Not much to go on but I’d heard mention of them and had a listen to the two available tracks which are good. Plus, if the Cookie were happy to give them a headline slot I figured they had to be worth seeing.

The evening begins with Midcity, whose debut headline show back in January proved to be a memorable affair
Despite being the most ‘established’ band on the bill tonight, they’re happy to open, Midcity don’t do pretentious. Apparently though, they do stunts. The latest from George Chanin being to play drums while standing on his stool. The things drummers will do to get attention. Usual set closer Grody is replaced in favour of next release Needles. Yet another infectious tune that showcases the depth of quality this young band is now reaching.

Here’s another new band for you, Gloss. Niall Godfree on guitar and vocals, Daniel Peel on guitar, Gianluca Castaldo on bass and Cameron Parnell on drums. These Leicester lads seem to have even less past history than Lacura. They’ve played The Cookie before but that’s about all I can find out about them. Despite being at such an early stage as a band with songs still in development, what they have to date is good, reminding me at times of fellow Leicester band Clubs. They’ve got potential and I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on them.

Lacura comprise Euan Fisher on drums, Ellis Turner on guitar and vocals and John Ives on bass. They’re no strangers to The Cookie but more often in the crowd than on the stage. Visits which are hopefully giving them a good grounding in music. They open with Singing Moon, one of the available tracks on Soundcloud. It’s odd but they have a sound of Black Sabbath about them at times, but only if Ozzy was getting into indie. The room is pretty full and heating up, and it’s no surprise when a mosh pit develops. Lead track from the EP Slur is saved to close the set. A brilliant two minutes and 22 seconds, sitar-sounding, mosh-making anthem. Coming back on for an encore and possibly having exhausted their own catalogue they pull out a great cover of Best Friends by Palma Violets. Afterwards they’re selling CDs for £1, and at that price you get a hand drawn cover to order!
