Nestled in Leicester’s cathedral quarter, Firebug has long been a bastion of the city’s music scene. Opening its doors in 2004, ‘Bug has hosted a range of excellent touring acts including the likes of Frank Turner and Frightened Rabbit as well as being a proud supporter of the city’s local artists.
As live music makes its long-awaited return, Firebug and her sister bar Duffy’s have teamed up to provide a stomping day of music this Bank Holiday Sunday and it is all for FREE! Headlining the evening on Firebug are Leicester’s own preachers of rock, the mighty Goldwater. Soul crunching blues-rock with heavy dashes of psychedelia and gypsy rhythms, the four-piece have become known for their explosive live performances as frontman Grant Decker prowls the stage like a maniacal preacher.
Over in Duffy’s, doom metal monsters Mage will be closing affairs with their own brand of stoner rock. Expect the riffs to be shaking the shamrocks of the walls of the tiny Irish pub.
Main support in Firebug for the evening is the high-octane bunch of misfits known as The Whiskey Rebellion. Foot stomping folk-infused Balkan swing and beer swilling sea shanties, the rebels of Whiskey are sure to get the crowd going.
Also, in Firebug are hotly tipped acoustic collective The Table Troubadours who recently silenced a sold-out Musician Pub with their soulful twist on modern Americana. Featuring members of The Brandy Thieves, The 40 Hertz, Paddywax and New Age Grace, The Troubadours combine intricate guitars with soulful harmonies to take their listeners on journey around their table and through their lives. A band definitely to keep on your radar.
Longstanding member of the local music scene Marcus Reeves will also be giving it his all for the Firebug crowd with his excellent Seasick Steve inspired hobo rock’n’roll. Meanwhile, in Duffy’s power metal trio The Darkhorse and doom/sludge rockers Tumanduumband will be keeping the walls shaking and the heads banging.
More acts are still being added at the time of publication. In addition, the Firebug DJs will be keeping the party going well into the early hours with a silent disco upstairs in Firebug and a Feedback DJ takeover in Duffy’s.
Doors are at 2pm, music starts at 5.30pm, entrance is Free, expect standing room only so get there early! It is a good job Monday is a bank holiday!
